Unfortunately, we need rules. Without them, things degrade pretty quickly, and the events just aren't as fun. Some of these rules may not seem to make much sense to you if you're new to LANing, but we can assure you they're all quite necessary. Please respect these rules - if you really don't like them, don't come.
General Rules
All of these rules apply, whether you like it or not. Others are dependant on the venue. We ask that all lanners respect the rules no matter where we go.
Alcohol is currently not allowed. We reserve the right to get you to sober up before walking around the rigs. You're drunk when we say you're drunk.
Smoking is outside only, unless a venue has a designated smoking area.
Headphones only please.
Use deodorant often.
Do not use other people's computers without their consent. Just because it is not being used, does not mean that you should use it! Use common sense here.
Do not take or borrow other people's CDs/Disks/DVDs/Zip Disks/USB Drives or other removable hardware or software with the owners consent.
We are not a warez convention.
No illegal drugs, firearms, weapons or chemical or biological substances. AND, no NOS (we're not a NOS bar...).
Don't watch explicit material or pornography on your computer. Take it home, we don't want to know.
We're not babysitters - we are an R18 event, with two notable exceptions: regulars we know and who are on an exception shortlist (which we're aggresively making shorter), and pro-tournament contestants.
Visitors
We allow visitors to come into our lans for free. However, once a visitor does go on a computer for more than 2 hours in total, we have to charge the visitor the entrance fee. Visitors also have to follow all the rules above, and they have to make sure they do not disturb any of the L3 attendees as well. That also includes badgering lanners with questions! It may sound harsh, but if you're on a rig playing games for hour after hour - as far as the venue owners are concerned, that's another person - and another fee for us to pay.
Network Setup
For all L3's we will assign you an IP address as you come in the door. Please go to the front of the room and see an admin (KingJackal, Solid Snake or any admin up the front) to log in, pay, and get your IP. I should be pretty obvious - I'll be the g33k whose face seems to be eternally plastered over the OCNZ forums! The IP's will all be of the form 172.16.yyy.xxx where xxx and yyy are numbers between 1 and 253. We log the IPs so that we can assure that no conflicts will occur. IPs are based off your website account, so you always get the same L3 address.
Seating and Power
Tables and seating will be set up before-hand, though you are pretty much free to put your rig where you want with the exception of reserved seats. I will be spreading the power grid out, so that the power load is spread across the power points available.
If you need many power points, please bring a 4-way power adapter with you. If everyone assumes that they'll be provided with 2 or maybe 3 mains power points, then there will be plenty of power-points. As a club we have 80 4-way multiboxes ourselves, so in most cases we should be able to cover you. There should be plenty of room, so if you really need to bring the gaming chair - go right ahead .
Redundancy
If you can bring spare LAN cables, please feel free to do so. People often forget, and while I DO come to events with a few dozen - they soon get used.
In short, you should prepare to be given 2 power points, and 1 port for your network cable .
Legal Issues for L3 Christchurch Lans
We provide patches and updates for common games, operating systems and device drivers. We cannot, however guarantee the validity or stability that any of these patches provide. We provide them only as a means to make sure that everybody at our events is running the same version of all their software, and ease any problems people may encounter while in the absence of an internet connection.
We ask that competitors in tournaments and games at LANs own all copywritten pay games, applications and operating systems that they use (open-source, shareware etc titles should have their respective requirements met). We can not authoritatively check for evidence of ownership simply because it would take too long, as there are too many hard-drives and too many CDs at a LAN. We would like to point out to attendees of our events that piracy is copywrite infringement, illegal - and it does hurt the consumer. As such, if we DO find conclusive evidence of software piracy, we will take steps to eliminate it. We will not be held accountable for the dishonesty of those that do decide to skirt the law.
People take a risk when they bring their PCs to an event. Often their machines use expensive equipment, and can not be readily replaced. L3 can not guarantee the safety of your computer from theft or arson. We ask that attendees make use of friends to keep watch over their equipment while they're away. Also, if any attendee see's theft or damage being willfully done to another persons computer, they should immediately inform any L3 staff, so we can take steps to stop it. Theft and arson will not be tolerated, and will be dealt with as severely as is possible under the law.
We are aware that not everything may be covered here already. If you have a legal concern, please raise this issue with Sam or James, and we will look into it.
